Russian Federation delegate visits the National Veterinary Institute

Excellency Maria Abdalkina, Representative of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation and Second Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Ethiopia, visited the National Veterinary Institute (NVI) on 27 January 2026 to discuss potential collaboration in technology transfer for livestock vaccine production.

During the meeting, the delegate expressed the Russian Federation’s interest in supporting collaborative agricultural initiatives with African countries, particularly in facilitating partnerships between Russian companies and NVI in vaccine production technologies.

The Director General of NVI, Dr. Takele Abayneh, emphasized the historical ties and ongoing collaborative engagements between Ethiopia and Russia. He conveyed the Institute’s strong interest in working with Russian companies and presented an overview of NVI, highlighting potential areas of cooperation. Dr. Takele underscored NVI’s main focus areas: enhancing production capacity, diversifying vaccine types, and advancing vaccine production technologies. He noted that technology transfer in high-demand vaccines; both for domestic use and export markets, is a priority.

The Operations Deputy Director General, Dr. Berecha Bayissa, further indicated that the supply of advanced vaccine production equipments, training programs, and experience-sharing initiatives with Russian companies could serve as key areas of collaboration.

The discussion was also attended by Dr. Alemayehu Mekonnen (Advisor to the State Minister for livestock at Ministry of Agriculture), Dr. Mirtneh Akalu (R&D Director, NVI), and Mr. Mesfin Tadesse (Sales Director, NVI), who contributed to the deliberations.
