NVI Hosts High-Level Stakeholder Dialogue on Antimicrobial Resistance and Innovative Therapeutic Alternatives

The National Veterinary Institute (NVI) hosted a High-Level Stakeholder Dialogue on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Innovative Therapeutic Alternatives on October 27, 2026, in Bishoftu.
The event brought together senior government officials, representatives of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada, regulatory authorities, universities, research institutions, and dairy industry stakeholders to discuss innovative approaches to combating antimicrobial resistance and promoting sustainable livestock production in Ethiopia.
Organized under the InnoVet-AMR Phase 2 research initiative, the dialogue highlighted progress achieved through the project entitled “Novel Therapeutics Leads as Alternatives to Antibiotics to Control Bacterial Infection in Ruminants,” implemented by NVI in collaboration with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and The Ohio State University, with financial support from IDRC.
Advancing Scientific Innovation to Combat AMR
During the event, participants discussed the growing challenges of antimicrobial resistance in Ethiopia’s livestock sector and the importance of strengthening research, innovation, regulatory frameworks, and institutional collaboration.
A major highlight was the presentation of the InnoVet-AMR project’s scientific achievements, particularly the development and experimental evaluation of promising nanoparticle-based therapeutic alternatives to conventional antibiotics for controlling bacterial infections in dairy calves.
The dialogue also featured presentations on national AMR priorities, the One Health approach, and regulatory pathways for innovative veterinary therapeutics.
Strengthening Partnerships for Research Translation
A high-level panel discussion, themed “From Scientific Innovation to Livestock Sector Impact: Advancing Novel Antimicrobial Alternatives in Ethiopia,” brought together representatives of government, research institutions, regulatory authorities, and development partners.
The discussion emphasized the importance of further scientific validation, safety and efficacy assessment, regulatory engagement, sustainable investment, and strategic partnerships to advance promising research findings toward potential practical veterinary applications.

Commitment to Sustainable Livestock Development
The dialogue reaffirmed the importance of strengthening collaboration among policymakers, researchers, regulators, development partners, and the livestock industry to address antimicrobial resistance through innovative and sustainable approaches.
NVI remains committed to advancing veterinary research, biotechnology, and innovative animal health solutions that contribute to improved livestock productivity, food security, and sustainable development in Ethiopia.
The Institute extends its sincere appreciation to IDRC, collaborating research partners, government institutions, universities, and all participating stakeholders for their valuable contributions to the success of the dialogue.
Together, advancing scientific innovation for healthier livestock and a sustainable future!
