The Institute has produced and delivered the Rinderpest (RP) vaccine, which serves as an emergency reserve Vaccine for Africa

The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) selected the National Veterinary Institute through an international tender to produce and temporarily supply the Rinderpest vaccine for emergency stockpiling at the Pan-African Veterinary Vaccine Control Centre (AU-PANVAC).

Given the global eradication of the disease, the production process requires utmost caution. Based on the agreement, the Institute successfully manufactured and delivered the vaccine to AU-PANVAC. This collaboration was formalized during a meeting between Dr. Takele Abayneh, Director General of the Institute, and Dr. Charles Bogo, Acting Director of AU-PANVAC.

As part of the temporary production approval process, a team of WOAH experts conducted an evaluation of the Institute’s production laboratory. The assessment was based on international standards, including good management practices, biosafety and biosecurity measures, and professional competence. The Institute was found to be qualified and granted permission, demonstrating its strength and capacity.

Dr. Takele Abayneh emphasized that this achievement reflects the Institute’s capability and its commitment to implementing contemporary global manufacturing standards (cCGMP), thereby enhancing its international competitiveness.
